When Multitasking Does More Harm Than Good

When Multitasking Does More Harm Than Good

Posted on 07/04/202207/04/2022 By Lucas Noah No Comments on When Multitasking Does More Harm Than Good

“Multitasking defines a hardworking person” is believed to be a mantra, but it is a misconception that has pushed many people off the cliff of good health. What is multitasking? It is the process of performing multiple tasks or a large number of tasks, as the term implies, at once.

Although multitasking can help you get multiple tasks or projects done, several health conditions like adult ADHD, migraines, anxiety, and depression have been linked to multitasking. Viz. Over-multitasking can be unhealthy and can hinder your productivity if done the wrong way.

Too Much Of A Good Thing

There is no denying that multitasking can help you accomplish multiple tasks and projects. But many people do it the wrong way by over-multitasking. If you do this multitasking incorrectly, you will have nothing but unhealthy and unproductive results. These negative results include the following:

Multitasking Makes You Lose Focus

Multitasking is famous for causing stress and making people less efficient. And when you are weighed down by stress and less efficient in your work, it can only be due to losing your focus, which often happens when you multitask.

Multitasking Can Slow You Down

One of the most harmful impacts of multitasking is low productivity. Generally, multitasking is an ability or skill that employees must learn. Although it may help you put a full stop to a large workload, it alters your level of productivity.

It Can Cause Damage To The Mind

Multitasking, as discussed earlier, used to be considered to provide positive results to the mind and brain functioning capacity. Meanwhile, recent research has shown that multitasking is harmful and damaging to your mental health. Hence, the brain functions better, more efficiently, and more productive on one task at a time.

How Multitasking Helps

Multitasking may be harmful and damaging to your health, but only if you do it incorrectly. There are healthy and effective ways to multitask without impeding the progress and productivity of each task. The most effective ways to multitask with unalterable focus and productivity include the following:

Limit The Number Of Tasks

Multitasking can be efficient and productive if your focus is on point. To achieve such utmost and unalterable focus when performing multiple tasks, you will have to limit the number of tasks to two or three tasks.

Limiting your number of tasks to two or three will allow you to focus on subtle details required to be productive, and you will achieve this efficiently without subjecting yourself to stress.

Prioritize Projects Or Tasks

Some tasks require your utmost attention, focus, and efficiency to achieve the expected result. You will be oblivious to these time-sensitive and important tasks if you do not separate them from other tasks.

Prioritizing your projects and tasks while multitasking to achieve the expected results will be advisable and beneficial. Doing this will ensure you give equal or almost equal energy in accomplishing various projects without compromising the productivity of any project or task.

Give Yourself Extra Time

Time is a factor that defines the success of your multitasking system. If you rush things without giving yourself enough time to finish your projects, you will experience several health issues, like depression, anxiety, stress, and migraines.

Although your health may be at risk if you do not give yourself reasonable time to accomplish your multiple tasks, you will not attain the utmost productivity each project requires.

Protect Eyes

You will experience dry eyes and digital eye strain symptoms, such as double vision and severe headaches if you use electronics for multitasking for an extended period. If you experience digital eye strain symptoms, you will not be healthy or fit to finish multiple tasks.

The most suitable way to protect your eyes from unhealthy conditions while multitasking with electronics is by using eyeglasses. However, it should not be any random eyeglasses, but prescription glasses frames designed to protect your eyes from the damaging effects of the light from your digital screen. You can get these prescription glasses frames at an affordable rate for a premium quality product online.

Multitask the Smart Way!

Multitasking is an admirable skill, but it is harmful to the health and productivity of your job if done carelessly. Although the joyful relief you will get when you finish several projects by multitasking is unmatched, you should not over-multitask. Instead, it would help if you multitasked properly by following the healthy, effective, and productive procedures discussed above.
